Hurry, Hurry! Lots of places are selling out fast for their Christmas events in 2020 so it’s time to get booked. There are still some magical events happening this Christmas in the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Yorkshire. I’ve put them into one big post so here you will find 12+ of the best Christmas events near you – where you can meet Santa and more. Don’t forget to book in advance this winter.

Beetle Bank Open Farm – Visit Santa in his Grotto – North Yorkshire

Santa is in his Grotto from 11am to 3pm on the weekends of the 5/6  –  12/13 and 10/20 of December. It’s £8 a child and 2 of his Reindeer will be joining him all being well.

Castle Howard – Christmas 2020 – North Yorkshire

Join us for a festive evening like no other as we take to the great outdoors for a spectacular lighting extravaganza for all ages to enjoy… ‘An Illuminated Christmas: Wish Upon A Frozen Star’! And there’s more. Father Christmas will be back! We understand that a Castle Howard Christmas holds a special place in people’s annual calendar. We are of course sad that due to current restrictions we cannot run our usual Christmas installations inside the House this year. Health and safety of our staff and visitors has always been our main priority, but we are committed to making new, magical events happen to keep the Christmas joy alive for our visitors.

We have partnered with a world class lighting company who’ll be designing a completely bespoke trail and light and sound show, with some live action too. And of course plenty of festive food, drink and shopping opportunities. Audiences will be able to book into time slots, to enable capacity management, flow around the trail and social distancing.

How much/Do you have to prebook? £45 per child for An Enchanted Audience with Father Christmas.

An Illuminated Christmas at Castle Howard: Full priced tickets range from £21 – £17 per adult and £15 – £12 per child, with discounts for Friends of Castle Howard. Prebooking for both events is essential.

City Cruises York – Santa Experience – North Yorkshire

Santa and his team have made a few changes this year, to make sure that we can offer you a secure and comfortable visit, without missing out on any of the fun.

You will join Santa and friends aboard the Captain James Cook, our largest boat, meaning that there will be more space for groups to socially distance.

Each group will be seated at their own table for up to 6 guests. Any group of 6 or more will be sat on socially distanced or partitioned tables with a maximum of 6 per table.

There will be a transparent screen between all tables.

All touch points will be cleaned regularly, staff will wear appropriate PPE, and hand sanitiser will be available around the vessel.

Eden Camp – Christmas on the Home Front – North Yorkshire

Join us in a home away from home for an exciting adventure as an evacuee at Christmas! Christmas during the Blitz is hard work for Father Christmas and his helpers. With children spread all over the country through evacuation, the team here at Eden Camp thought we would lend Father Christmas a hand and invite the children to come to him!
Explore a 1940s bedroom, hear the story of an evacuee first-hand and explore the Winter Wonderland on the way to finding Father Christmas.

How much/Do you have to prebook? Tickets are charged at £15 per child aged up to 15 years old (*under 1s are free of charge but do not receive a gift). One free adult per paying child. Additional adults are charged at our standard admission price of £12 per person. Prebooking is essential. Tickets go live on Thursday 1st October at 7am.

Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway – Santa Trains – North Yorkshire

Santa classic – Santa will be on the train, giving out presents to well behaved children, festive music will be playing whilst entertainers & elves will ensure a jovial Christmas spirit throughout!

For sale in our buffet car, we’ve got mulled wine, Christmas cookies, mince pies, the best hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows, real ale, Baileys, Irish coffee, gingerbread latte and more! Trains depart Bolton Abbey station at 10.30am, 12.00pm, 1.30pm. and 3.00pm giving a round trip of 1 hour.

Plus first class ticket experience, premium compartments, evening specials, festive afternoon tea and Picnic or breakfast with Santa.

Embsay Railway

When? Selected dates between 28th November and 24th December.

How much/Do you have to prebook? Prices for each different level range from £13 through to £26 plus other prices for different experiences. Prebooking is essential.

Lightwater Valley Christmas – North Yorkshire

Be enchanted by the fantastical family-friendly Alice in Winterland giant lanterns display as the sun sets over the park. Visitors of all ages can follow the luminous trail and immerse themselves in a glowing garden with massive mushrooms, illuminated tulips and even a flamingo or two.

New for 2020, families can enjoy glowing entertainment from a special Christmas themed UV Puppet show in the Show Barn and go on the hunt for the cheeky missing elves as they cause mischief around the park. Little ones can also see Santa on stage and get a chocolate treat before visiting the magical workshop of wonders. Then hop aboard the Santa Express and see Lightwater Valley by train.

When? Families can discover a whole host of festive fun as Christmas comes to Lightwater Valley on selected dates from Saturday 21st November – Wednesday 23rd December 2020. 

How much/Do you have to prebook? An adult ticket is £12.50 and a child ticket is the same price. You must prebook.

Northwood Fairy Trail – Christmas at Northwood – North Yorkshire

We will be doing a christmas event this year and due to the current situation we will have Lady Winters grotto and story telling with St Nicholas in his large outdoor grotto with socially distanced “tables” that can seat up to 5. We will sell per “table” to allow family grouping social distancing. Details to follow.

Please be aware, this is different from the red-suited Santa Claus; This is a different and older interpretation of Father Christmas. It will be an atmospheric Christmas of stories, candles and imagination. Children won’t receive a toy but something more meaningful and symbolic instead, as well as chocolate coin.

Northwood Fairy Trail

When? Sat / sun 30th November / 1st Dec, Sat/ sun 7th/ 8th Dec, Sat 14th Dec – 23th Dec. With 4 sessions a day.

How much/Do you have to prebook? Tickets are £15 per person.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway – Santa Reimagined – North Yorkshire

Meet Santa’s helpers and travel on a heritage steam train in your own private compartment, whilst listening to Jingle Bells FM radio. Celebrate the most wonderful time of the year with your family as you travel to Levisham Station.

Your heritage steam train awaits at the beautifully decorated Pickering Station, ready to take you on a Christmas adventure. You’ll hopefully catch a glimpse of Santa himself too, as he prepares for the biggest night of the year.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway

When? 5 & 6, 12 & 13, 19 & 20, 21, 22, 23 & 24 December 2020. With four trains each day.

How much/Do you have to prebook? Private compartment: £100 for up to 4 people. £25 per additional adult or child (Max 6 people in total). Child 1-16 years old. Yes you have to prebook.

Piglets Adventure Farm – Magical Sleigh Rides – North Yorkshire

Jump aboard the magical sleigh ride to Santa’s Woodland village for a truly unforgettable Christmas experience with NEW activities for this year. Reduced visitor numbers throughout the experience including on Santa’s sleigh. Santa’s cheeky elves will greet you and take you and your family to see santa in his grotto for a new exclusive and truly personal experience. Plus much more.

Piglets adventure farm

How much/Do you have to prebook? They are selling tickets in three pricing tiers from front row to back row. These prices are from £10.95 to £20.95. You must prebook.

Thorp Perrow – Santa’s Grotto – North Yorkshire

On sale Friday 18th September. To be CV-19 compliant the grotto can be exclusively booked for a maximum group size of six (including adults). Each group will have the opportunity to walk through the magical winter wonderland, home to a host of wonderful creatures, Santa and his donkeys, chat with the big man himself (at a safe distance) and a gift will be provided to all.

The grotto will be operating a one-way system and only one group will be allowed in at a time. Our Season ticket holders can exclusively book tickets from Friday 18th September for 1 week. Tickets will then be put on General Release on Saturday 26th September. For all our dates and CV-19 regs, please visit our website from Friday 18th.

Thorp Perrow

How much/Do you have to prebook? Santa’s grotto cost £7 per child, to be booked in advance online via our website (standard entry applies at the gate on the day).

Wensleydale Polar Express – North Yorkshire

Your journey begins just like the 2004 motion picture when THE POLAR EXPRESS™ will pick you up at Leeming Bar station to take you to the North Pole. You will get to meet the characters from the film including the conductor, the singing chefs, the hobo and of course the main man himself Father Christmas. You and your family, hopefully dressed in PJs, will experience a fun filled theatrical adventure as you make your way to the North Pole.

Don’t forget to have a bite of your cookie and authentic hot chocolate before arriving at the North Pole to meet Santa Claus. Santa will join you on board and, if you are on the nice list, hand you your first gift of Christmas, a Silver Sleigh Bell just as in the motion picture we all love. You will get to speak with Santa.

Wensleydale Railway

Sewerby – Enchanted Winter Wonderland – East Yorkshire

A brand new event is coming to Sewerby Hall and Gardens this year: Enchanted Winter Woodland will take you on a magical outdoor journey of spectacular sounds and lights.

Discover that The Snow Queen has cast a spell on the beautiful woodland, which has come alive with light and sounds. Joining the Sewerby polar explorer on his expedition, travel through an illuminated tunnel into the winter woods, and embark on their quest into the Snow Queen’s domain.

How much/Do you have to prebook? Early Bird tickets are available until 31 October, and will cost £10 for adults, and £6 for children, with a family ticket (two adults and two children) costing £25. Prebooking is essential.

Sledmere – Santa’s Magic Grotto – East Yorkshire

The Sledmere Santa’s Grotto gets bigger and better every year – you have to see it to believe it! But, because we want you to have the most magical experience possible, the fun doesn’t stop at meeting Santa.

Stockeld Park – Christmas Adventure – North Yorkshire

What was once but a simple Christmas Tree shop, from this small acorn grew what came to be Stockeld Park’s most famous adventure season. Join us for Christmas fun with various events and watch the Enchanted Forest come alive after dusk with our famous winter illuminations! This truly is the home of Christmas magic. Plus Santa’s Christmas grotto.
