Diggerland West Yorkshire | Review

I have been wanting to take Jamie to Diggerland in West Yorkshire for so long. But I waited, patiently, as I wanted him to be old enough and tall enough to enjoy as much as possible. At 5 years old and over 120cms we couldn’t have picked a better time for his first visit. We were also gifted the tickets by Diggerland in exchange for a review. As always this is a 100% honest review. I will run through everything we managed to fit into our visit including height restrictions and what we thought of each attraction. I would recommend Diggerland to anyone with kids aged 4-14. There is so much to do there in such a relatively small space. Please don’t assume it’s for boys either! I saw many girls having a great time.

They also have locations in Kent, Devon and Durham.

Diggerland West Yorkshire Review

The West Yorkshire branch of Diggerland is in Wakefield. It literally is in Wakefield. For some reason, I was expecting it to be set in rolling countryside. Instead, it’s in a small industrial estate and has a relatively small car park. It felt like everyone was arriving at once and we were concerned we’d spend the day queueing. In fact, there was so much to do there we rarely had to queue for a few minutes, sometimes not at all. It was quite a cold day and we were very relieved that it wasn’t too far to walk between each attraction. The major bonus being it was never too far to walk to the shop or cafe to get warm again.

Please note that Diggerland is not open all year. It is open from Easter half-term until the end of summer. Over the winter it is open for February half-term.

We did not manage to go on everything. We bottled out of one ride and a few others either weren’t for us or weren’t suitable. I will cover all the rides we went on and then I will cover everything else below that.

Rides and Attractions at Diggerland West Yorkshire

Dig-A-Round

Height limit – You must be over 80cm to ride.
About the ride – This is similar to a merry-go-round but in a digger arm. You can sit two in an arm and the arms are controlled by one digger cab. You go round forwards and then backwards. I thought it was a shame we didn’t get bounced about but it was great fun going backwards.

Mini Landrovers

Height limit – You must be at least 90cm to ride and 100cm to drive.  If you do not reach the stated heights you, unfortunately, cannot participate in this activity. Visitors over 140cm are not allowed to take part in this activity.
About the ride – My son loved the mini Landrovers so much he asked to go on for a second time. They are electric powered and kids can drive them around a circuit which even includes a mini hill. He was so proud driving his little car around.

Mini Tractors

Height limit – You must be at least 100cm to ride if accompanied by an adult or over 120cm to drive without an adult.
About the ride – Kids and adults can ride these mini tractors around a dirt track. It was a fun and very bouncy ride.

Skittles

Height limit – You must be at least 80cm to ride if accompanied by an adult or over 110cm to operate without an adult.
About the ride – You have to operate a digger arm to knock over the skittles. Sounds easy….it’s not. There is a technique to it though and we found the lower we swung the easier it was to knock them down.

Dippy Ducks

Height Limit – You must be over 80cm to ride if accompanied by an adult, or over 110cm to operate without an adult.
About the ride – Similar to skittles but this time you have to hook ducks from out of the water. The wire on our ducks was next to nothing and we found this virtually impossible.

Buried Treasure

Height limit – You must be over 80 cm to ride if accompanied by an adult, or over 110 cm to operate without an adult.
About the ride – We thought dippy ducks was hard….not until we had a go at buried treasure. You have to retrieve bricks from out of the gravel pit. Try as we might ours just kept falling through the gaps of the digger arm. This was sooooo hard! But we did spot other people managing it with no problem at all.

Go-Karts

Height limit – You must be at least 80cm to drive the Go-Karts, if accompanied by someone suitable to drive, or over 100cmto drive independently.
About the ride – You don’t need to pay £1-2 for the go-karts indoors as they have ones outside that are included in the admission price. Kids go round the circuit in groups but staggered so there is no opportunity to race.

Go-Karts

Skyshuttle

Height limit – You must be at least 80cm to ride
About the ride – This is a ride that goes up to 50 feet in the air. You sit in a carriage on the end of a digger arm which goes slowly up in the air. You are left up there for a few minutes before it continues its slow descent. It gives you great views of the park but my goodness was it cold up there.

Robots

Height limit – You must be at least 90cm to ride if accompanied by an adult or over 110cm to operate without an adult.
About the ride – I still can’t believe my 5 year old managed to drive himself around this course. What an achievement and how great they trust little kids to give this a go. The digger is controlled by what is essentially a joystick. It was highly entertaining watching Jamie drive around. He did ever so well considering.

Safari

Height limit – You must be at least 80cm to ride.
About the ride – This was a great way of getting warm for a few minutes. This is a drive around a track in a 4×4 Mitsubishi (with a driver). It’s great fun. The safari aspect to it is a bit lost with a few pictures of animals here and there. But the ride was bumpy and fun and the man driving us was friendly and engaging.

Diggerland Train

Height limit – The Diggerland Train is suitable for any visitor, however, children under 80cm must ride on an adults lap.
About the ride – Adults get to sit in a safari trailer while the kids are pulled along behind in their own little carriage. Kids can also ride with adults if they so wish but then they wouldn’t get to beep the horn and spin the wheel.

JCB 3CX

Height limit – You must be at least 90cm to ride or over 110cm to drive. Maximum of one driver and three riders.
About the ride – This is a ride in a JCB tractor. It does state online and on the sign that one person can drive while a member of the Diggerland team assists. There was no one allowed to drive during our visit, I think it was because of the excess mud. We did enjoy being driven around in the tractor though.

Groundshuttle

Height limit – You must be at least 100cm to ride.
About the ride – This ride was one of our favourites, it was so much fun. You are strapped into a carriage at the end of a JCB. You are then driven around a muddy and very bumpy track. It is the oddest sensation and it was certainly a bouncy ride.

Attractions we didn’t go on

Stack Attack

Height limit – Minimum height is 140cms
About the ride – You get to drive and use a Avant 200 series to move around and stack up old wheels.

Giant Diggers and also Dirt Diggers

Height limit – You must be at least 90cm to ride if accompanied by an adult or over 110cm to operate without an adult.
About the ride – You can sit in a JCB excavator cab and control the arm to dig in the mud. It’s more challenging than it looks. The only reason we didn’t have a go is because we just weren’t improving with controlling a digger arm.

Giant Diggers

Dumper Trucks

Height limit – To drive the Dumper Trucks you must be at least 90cm to ride if accompanied by an adult or over 140cm to drive without an adult.
About the ride – I couldn’t persuade my son to go on this for some reason. I think it’s because he wasn’t quite tall enough to ride by himself. You get to drive a dumper truck around a circuit.

SpinDizzy

Height Limit – You must be over 100cm to ride on this ride
About the ride – This is the ride we bottled. None of us braved it as we are all clearly wimps. To see it in action you will have to watch my video (coming soon). You are strapped into a specially constructed digger bucket and you are spun and bounced around like there’s no tomorrow. My 14 year old self would have gone on this ride.

Spindizzy

Joyrider

Height limit – Kids have to be over 140cms to drive. Children under 80cm in height can ride in the car.
About the ride – If your kids are over 140cm (55”) tall and under 17 years old, they can get behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Pajero and go for a joy-ride around our special 400 metre course in one of our Diggerland Police 4WD SUVs.

Crazy Carts

Height limit – You must be 140cms or over to ride a crazy cart. You can not be over the age of 16 and you must wear a safety helmet (provided).
About the ride – These are mini electric carts which can spin around at speeds of up to 20km an hour.

Indoor Play Area

Generally, if we are having an outdoor day with lots to do that we’ve not done before I don’t let my son go in soft play. I was very tempted as it was cold but I stood by my rule. Soft play is included in the admission ticket and is perfect if it starts to rain. At Yorkshire the indoor play area consists of Soft play (suitable for toddlers up to 3 years), Ball pit (suitable for toddlers up to 3 years). 2 storey indoor soft play (suitable for 3 – 12 years). Bouncy castle for children 1.3m and over. Arcade games (additional charge), Computer with digger games and pedal tractors.

Coin Operated Rides at Diggerland

They also have a few coin operated rides at Diggerland. In the cafe area they have electric ride ons and also go-karts. Outside there are more electric ride ons around a road circuit, mini digger arms and bumper cars. Most are £1 a go.

The Cafe at Diggerland West Yorkshire

There is one cafe at Diggerland which perhaps could do with a few more tables in it rather than two ride on circuits. I noticed a lot of people struggling to find a table and some walked back out again. They serve hot and cold drinks and hot and cold food. The prices are reasonable. We had a panini each which were tasty and my son had hot dog and chips. We arrived just before 12pm for our lunch and we were glad that we did as the queue soon got very long and the tables soon filled up.

Our thoughts

We all really enjoyed our day out to Diggerland. There was myself, my Mum and my 5 year old. Even my Mum had a good day and she didn’t join in with as much as we did. She still enjoyed it because of how unique and different it is there. They have really gone to town with the digger theme and someone with a lot of imagination and some really great ideas has put this park together. It was also good because it appeals to such a wide age range. Even young kids can have a go at things that even older kids would find fun and challenging. I especially liked how little children could drive some of the tractors etc. when you wouldn’t expect that they would be allowed to.
