The Collector – Luxury Inn & Gardens, St. Augustine Florida | Review

The Collector Luxury Inn and gardens is where we chose to spend our ‘rest’ days during our three week holiday to Florida. We wanted somewhere that we could show our son a different side of  America, than just theme parks. Plus somewhere we could chill for a few days yet still be able to go out during the day. We also really didn’t want to stay at a resort. Initially, we were looking at the Florida Keys however it was just so expensive and it would have blown a huge proportion of our holiday budget. So after a bit of research, we chose Saint Augustine and through further research, we chose the Collector Luxury Inn.

After a bit of confusion trying to get petrol and a lunch break along the way, it took us about 4 hours to get from Kissimmee in Orlando to St. Augustine on the east coast of Florida. We also took the coastal A1A road which was much prettier and picturesque than the interstate. Although it did take a lot longer! You could probably drive there in around 2 hours.

A bit about St. Augustine

St. Augustine is believed to be the oldest still-inhabited city in the USA. It is famous for its colonial Spanish architecture, it’s fort and nearby beaches. As American history goes this place is full of it and it’s a truly lovely place to visit. If you are visiting just for one day I would recommend taking a tram tour of the city and stopping off along the way. It’s quite a compact city and it is very walkable however the tram is lovely and you really can appreciate the city for what it is once on board. The oldest part of the town is where you will find the shops and restaurants.

Everything about The Collector Inn Review

We had wanted a beach holiday, however, the beach at St. Augustine is a driving distance away from the centre of Saint Augustine. So instead we chose to stay close to the historic centre and visited the beach on a couple of occasions during our stay. The Collector Inn is just on the outskirts of the centre and is within walking distance of a few restaurants, tram stops and the harbour area.

The Collector Luxury Inn Suite Prices

They have a variety of suites at the Collector Inn and they are all located within one of their old and authentic colonial houses. The houses are set within some really beautiful gardens and it really felt like we were stepping back in time. Each house has around 2-4 suites within them. We stayed for 4 nights in mid-February 2017. We paid around £280.00 a night which was a lot. However as mentioned above we were struggling to find much else. I think it was a combination of it being half term for some parts of America and we were booking quite last minute. Currently, our suite is only $230 a night in mid-June if you book through their website

The Collector Luxury Inn Parking

Parking is not on site at the Collector Luxury Inn. When you arrive you are met by staff who will take your car and park it at their allocated garage a few minutes walk away. This did become a bit of a bugbear for us as we had to be ready a long time in advance of needing to be somewhere. We did however only take it out a few times during our visit. If you’re not careful this is also charged as an additional extra which was frustrating for us as we’d also tipped the drivers.

Waiting for our car

We had a few issues such as our card being charged twice and needing them to send emails to our cardholder to refund the money back to us. We also had a problem with our air con making a lot of noise. Plus someone entered our room with a room card when reception had told them our room was free when it wasn’t. All of this did result in a substantial refund on our room rate. Their efficiency in dealing with everything was very good and the refund was very much appreciated. It would not put me off recommending this place as somewhere to stay. I think we were just a bit unlucky and the room and location were very good.

Our Suite at the Collector Luxury Inn

They have a variety of suite options. We stayed in the Emerson King Suite. This has a maximum occupancy of 3 people. We had a king size bed in one room with a TV, wardrobe, drawers and a bedside table. There was also an iron and ironing board. Free wi-fi was included in our stay.

The large laptop sized safe was also located in here. We then had a second room which could be divided with a pull out wooden door. This had a single sized sofa bed, TV, table and two chairs plus a small kitchenette and the access to the shower room.

The Kitchenette

The kitchenette was relatively well equipped. There was a fridge, microwave, kettle and accessories. We had breakfast included in our stay so we only really used this area for keeping our drinks cold. There was also a relatively large shower room with a walk-in shower. Not all of their suites are the same internally. Towels, bathrobes and some toiletries were included.

The shower room

As mentioned above we had breakfast included. It was a simple continental breakfast and our favourite things were their bagels and muffins. There was fresh juice and you made your own tea and coffee via a machine.

The outside seating area for our suite was downstairs and shared with the other two rooms in the house we were in. There was only ever us sat out there and we spent quite a few relaxing hours rocking on the porch chairs and watching the world go by.

The Outside area of our suite

A look around the rest of the Collector Luxury Inn

They have a very attractive bar area with tables outside. There are a couple of fire pits for the cooler evenings and these were lit during our stay.

The pool is small but warm. We went for a swim a few times during our visit and we mostly had the pool to ourselves. It’s located opposite the bar area.

There are some really lovely spots within their gardens

Also within the gardens, they have a few signs telling you about historical facts connected with the houses and grounds of the Collector.

Where we ate in Saint Augustine – Restaurant near the Collector Inn

There are a few restaurants within walking distance of the Collector Inn. We stayed there for four nights and we ate at the same O.C. Whites restaurant every night. This is not like us at all, however, we found it on our first night there and loved it so much that we kept going back. They had a lovely outside area where they had a live musician every night. The food was fresh and good value for money and the portions were of a perfect size. You can pre-book a table however it doesn’t guarantee you a table upon arrival. You still have to wait for a table to become free it just gives you preference over other people. This causes major issues if you haven’t ‘pre-booked’.
