I have an exciting and fun range of products to tell you about. They are from a company called Little Cook Box. They have a good selection of healthy and nutritious recipe boxes that are especially for your kids to cook at home. Not only that but I have 6 of these boxes available as a giveaway. (scroll down to the end of my review to enter).

The recipe boxes are really simple to follow which is perfect children. They are ideal and are designed for kids aged 5 up to 11. Younger children will need more help with preparation than older ones but my nearly 5 year old managed to do the vast majority of preparation himself and I handled the ‘hot side’ of the recipes.

How Does it Work?

Firstly you need to head on over to the Little Cook Box website where you can choose 4, 6, 8 or 9 meal kits. The more kits you buy the more money you can save. We were sent 6 boxes which work out at £4.85 per meal. 1 kit = 1 meal. For our nearly 5 year old the portions were more than enough and there was often some food left over as he’d eaten plenty. Which meant we were able to try a bit of what he had cooked which he loved to share. The price is good in that you don’t have to buy a large quantity of each ingredient for your child to cook the recipe. It would cost more to buy each ingredient as an individual product.

If your children have no allergies then you can select the ‘All Meals’ options. If they do have allergies they have broken the website down into really easy to understand categories. You can choose to view just dairy free recipe boxes, or egg free, fish free, gluten free and meat free kits. There is a brief description of what is inside each box and a clear to read list of allergens. You can click to learn about nutrition and full ingredients plus there’s handy symbols telling you what skills your kids will learn while following each recipe. For example with the Cheeky Chicken Kebabs your kids will learn baking, mixing and dressing a salad.

Once you’ve chosen and bought your kits they will be sent to you in a large box packed with polystyrene insulation and cool blocks. They deliver 3 days a week and I was informed, in advance, when our delivery would be arriving. Most of the packaging can be recycled. You can request for your box to be left in a safe place or with a neighbour. Although I would prefer to be in if it is a warm/hot day so that the products can go straight in the fridge.

I was a little surprised by the size of the boxes. It would be nice to see the plastic trays shrunk in size a little as there was a lot of ‘wasted space’.

Cooking the Little Cook Box Kits

My son had a huge amount of enthusiasm each time it was his turn to cook his Little Cook Box Kit. He has baked a little at home with me but less so since he started school. These kits were so convenient for our busy lives as from start to end they only took around 30 minutes. They recommend that the kits are used within 4 days and some of the kits may stay fresh a little longer. We used up 3 of the boxes in one evening once as my son cooked a BBQ style meal with a bit of each box for the three of us.

The boxes are bright and easy to read. My son has learnt to read this past year and he read the writing on both the front and the back of the kit boxes with ease. In that sense it was good that the boxes were large as they are very eligible.

Each kit has 3 large compartments. One with the main ingredient, one with a large salad and the other for the main accompaniment to the dish. There were then 3 smaller compartments which mostly had sauces, marinades or extra ingredients to help make the dish extra tasty. All of the ingredients had been pre washed and also mostly prepared in the sense that your children won’t have any chopping to do. Which is great for an independent child who really shouldn’t be attempting to cut vegetables quite yet.

It was great that the plastic top was super easy for my son to remove. Most of the boxes we were sent involved rolling and mixing the minced meats with breadcrumbs or herbs. My son loved this stage and it was a really good way for him to get involved. I didn’t allow him to handle the chicken though as I’m a little paranoid about raw chicken.

Mixing the fish cakes together

The mash potato was pre prepared in sticks. He was able to use this to create fish cakes and also to mix together with cheese to make cheesy mash which he loved. Most of the accompaniments go in the microwave so he enjoyed preparing, putting the bowl in the microwave and selecting the correct time. A lot of the boxes also involved setting out ingredients to put things together such as the fish cakes which needed separate egg, breadcrumbs (provided) and flour.

A few of the kits we were sent were great for cooking on the BBQ. One evening our son chose to cook up 3 of his 6 boxes so that he could share them with us. We had such a delicious meal. It was so tasty and so fresh and there was plenty for the 3 of us with an addition of garlic bread.

Our Verdict

We were sent 6 meals they were

Posh Pork & Apple Sausages Kit – with amazing mash and blissful barbeque sauce. High in Protein, Low in Sugar. Energy Kcal 660.

Perfect Pittas Kit – stuffed with mini lamb meatballs and Tzatziki. High in Protein. Provides 1 of your 5-a-day, Low in Sugar. Energy Kcal 616.

Mighty Mini Burgers Kit – with soft buns and tasty trimmings. Low in sugar, high in protein. Energy Kcal 643.

Lavish Lamb Kebabs Kit – with pilau rice and zesty yogurt dip. High in protein, low in sugar. Energy Kcal 666.

Cheeky Chicken Kebab Kit – with fruity couscous, crispy salad and a minty lemon dressing. High in protein. Energy Kcal 657.

Scrummy Smoked Fish Cakes Kit – happy haddock with tasty veg. Source of protein, Provides 1 of your 5-a-day, Low in sugar. Energy Kcal 657.

All meals were easy for my almost 5 year old to help with and do as much as he possibly could to prepare the meal himself. All the food was fresh and tasty and many of the accompanying sauces were a great addition to the kits. None of the kits took a long time to prepare and it was great that the salads and mash were ready made yet still often had things that needed doing to them. Our favourites (he let my try a bit of each) were the lamb kebabs which were so full of flavour, the mini burgers especially the brioche bun which was super soft. My son would have all of them again except the fish cakes but my husband and myself thought they were lovely. He was just in a strange mood that day!

It has sparked a big interest and desire in helping me to cook now. In the past 2 nights he hasn’t had a kit to cook but he has still brought his kitchen steps out and stood by me wanting to help as much as possible. I don’t know how long this will last but hopefully it will continue. We wouldn’t hesitate to buy him these kits. They are great for all aspiring and non aspiring chefs.

  8. SPAG BOL —BECAUSE THEY ALL LOVE IT. I snap the spaghetti in half before i cook it—to make it easier to eat

  9. Homemade fish pie with some steamed veggies on the side and a slice of garlic bread i like to serve this as i know my kids love it and they are getting a healthy balanced meal

  10. Macaroni cheese because it always goes down a treat in this house. Plates are always cleared so no waste 🙂

  12. Anything that’s made with my homemade tomato sauce. I keep it basic, loads of veg, and then add herbs or spices to fit the meal we’re having, spag bol, enchiladas, tomato soup, chilli etc… And the best part is my daughter knows exactly what goes in it, as she helps me make it, and she still eats it.

  13. you cant go wrong with a good old spag bol or meatball bolognase, you can get loads of vegetables in it, and as long as the sauce is home made and fat drained from the meat it can be quite a nutritional balanced meal.

  14. Spaghetti Bolognes because it is quick and easy to make. I make it in large batches so I can freeze it for a later date. The kids really enjoy it and always clear their plates. Sometime we have it with a bake potato in its skin just for a change

  15. My daughter and I love to do pizza, its something fun for us both to do and of course is very quick to do which I love!

  16. My son has autism and only eats beige (not for the want of trying to get him to eat something healthy!) and his fave is pasta with grated cheese. He does love to cook though and wants to be a chef when he grows up so I love the idea of these boxes!

  17. MY son loves sardine bolgnaise! he has it at preschool and its FULL to the brim of secret veggies! his ultimate fave x

  18. Chicken fajitas and egg fried rice. We like to make this as the kids can try making the fajitas up and can choose what bits they want to put in and then they also eat it all as they love the home made egg fried rice.

  19. My little ones love risotto and it’s a great way to use up veggies, meat fish etc. I just pre-cook the arborio then throw everything together. It’s fairly cheap and tasty.

  20. Spag bol – They love it and they don’t know there are loads of vegetables in there chopped so small they can’t see or taste them! so it is nutritious!

  21. I think they like pasta dishes such as spaghetti bolognese more than others as they seem to clear the plate more often.

  22. Chilli Con Carne, beacause I make my own version that is spicy and I am proud of them for eating it without complaining about the heat.

  23. We love making my grandmas receipe if German fried pototes, eggs and a red cabbage salad. It’s a family favourite and everyone can help pitch in! It’s just gorgeous

  24. I love making him pizzas because he can choose the toppings and it encourages him to try some colourful vegetables.

  27. Homemade pizzas that we usually make into the shape of an animal, boat etc and they get to put their own toppings on. They love this

  28. My children and I love making soups together. Their favourite is leek and potato soup. If I’m brimming with patience we’ll also make the bread to go with it!

  29. I like to make Spag Bol with the kids, gets them involved, can ‘hide’ veggies in there too and a messy meal is always a fun meal 🙂

  30. My girls love anything with pasta or spaghetti! I can always guarantee their plates will be clean if we have a meal based around pasta! It’s both easy to eat, fun to make and usually scrumptious and healthy and it is so versatile, there are so many dishes to be made based around pasta.

  31. we like making fajitas for the kids but some options don’t include spicy meat so they can put anything they want in their wrap

  32. Home-made Shepherds pie. A warm filling, hearty, comforting dinner, and guaranteed to have all empty plates at the end.
