Fancy Hank’s Bar & Kitchen York – Review

Situated on Goodramgate, a side street up by the historic York Minster you will find Fancy Hank’s bar and kitchen. The restaurant is inspired by food from the southern states of America. We were recently invited to review their food and we were met with a wonderful vibrant restaurant with friendly staff and a great atmosphere.

You can’t miss the exterior of the restaurant. It’s bold and welcoming. Upon entering the restaurant we were soon met by one of the members of staff and shown to our table. We were booked in for 12:30 pm and feeling cold and rather hungry we had turned up rather early at 12 pm. What surprised us was how busy it already was and how many people were already eating food. But once I looked at their menu and saw all the wonderful breakfast offerings I soon understood why people were already eating.

The restaurant even has tables outside should you visit on a nice warm day. We had a good-sized table for the three of us and the decor was funky and vibrant. Although I couldn’t take any photos of the decor due to the other customers.

Fancy Hank’s York Review

There is a good choice of cocktails and milkshakes at Fancy Hank’s. My Mum and I both opted for a glass of wine although I did regret not ordering a cocktail as they looked wonderful. Fancy Hank’s has an A.M menu with all sorts of wonderful sounding breakfast options including shrimp and crab omelette and bacon and egg waffles. This is served from 10 am until 3 pm and also includes mac and cheese dishes, a great choice of buttermilk fried chicken, burgers, sandwiches and waffles.

I hadn’t brought anything to entertain the 6-year-old and he was soon looking fidgety and declaring that he needed something to do. The waitress soon rallied round and brought him a tub of colouring pencils and lots of plain paper.

I chose a buttermilk fried chicken dish and went for the chicken tenders, £11. These are served with either mash or fries, slaw and a southern gravy. My goodness was it tasty and certainly tender. I opted for mash and I was glad I did as the whole dish went really well together. It is a dish I would make the effort to return for.

Chicken tenders

My Mum opted for a cheeseburger, £9.50, with a beef patty with cheese, lettuce, tomato, bacon jam, pickle and ‘fancy sauce’. She was really impressed and commented that it was all very tasty.

They also have a children’s menu at £7.95 for two courses. There is a choice of cheeseburger, chicken burger, chicken tenders, mac and cheese and a corn burger. My son opted for a cheeseburger without the cheese and gave his meal two thumbs up. Now I know how good the chicken tenders are I’d certainly persuade him to try them next time as they were so tasty.

Dessert on his menu was Beignets with either chocolate or jam dip. After living in France for 14 years I’ve tried a lot of Beignets and I have to say that these were on a par with some of the best. Beignets are a little bit like doughnuts, but without the hole, and are made from a deep-fried choux pastry which is then sprinkled with sugar. These were a real treat and luckily there was plenty for him to share. We would have had a dessert of our own but our main meals were more than enough for us.

His face when I asked if he’d enjoyed his beignets!

Their P.M menu is served from 4 pm. This has a choice of small plates ‘starters from £4-7. These would be fun as a ‘tapas’ type meal to share with others. A lot of the rest of the menu has a few classic dishes from the A.M Menu.

We all really enjoyed our meal and for a York restaurant with a great atmosphere, the prices were very reasonable.
