Things to do at Basildon Park review
Basildon Park is a National Trust property with some interesting features and a lovely garden. Inside the house (used to film Pride and Prejudice in 2005) there are some very quirky features including a room completely decorated with shells! There’s also a very impressive dining room and a 1950’s kitchen. It is located in Lower Basildon near Reading.
When you first arrive make sure you have a look around the groundskeepers’ exhibit in the stables area. This is left pretty much as it was when the last groundsman left. It’s a fascinating time capsule.
The grounds are particularly good here. In order to get to the house, there’s a little woodland walk, and this is where a lot of their trails take place. As well as the formal gardens there are wide open spaces to explore. If you’re lucky you might even get one of the giant deckchairs to sit on!
There are plenty of self-led walks around the estate, including a wild play trail and natural play areas. The play trail has recently been refurbished and now have over 20 different stations. This includes things like a wooden xylophone, log bridge and a sensory room. You’ll also find a new play area for younger kids and lots of ball runs (bring your own ball though). Make sure that you get a map of the gardens and estate so you don’t miss anything.
Eating – There is a cafe near the entrance and tea room in the house. Picnics are welcome.
