Things to do at Cliveden National Trust review
Cliveden is one of the most visited National Trust properties in the UK. The house is now an exclusive hotel (Meghan Markle stayed there before her wedding day). Although a small part of it opens to the public for a small fee from March until October on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (bookable guided tours).
There is so much to do in the grounds. The most child-friendly section is the water garden. As well as a beautiful lake with a little island, there’s a maze and a very impressive storybook themed playground. The maze is relatively difficult but it’s impossible to get lost in there, if you just keep going you’ll get there eventually. The lake is full of very friendly, and massive, Koi Carp.
There are so many different things to do around the estate that you can visit dozens of times and never do the same thing twice. There’s a large woodland to explore, walks alongside the River Thames and the stunning Parterre which is brilliant for setting up camp for the day and letting the kids explore.
There’s several smaller gardens such as the Long Garden and the Rose Garden, each with its own little treats. There are various little outhouses to explore in the grounds as well. Dotted around are some amazing picnic spots and some great trees to climb. It is a large estate so expect to do a lot of walking, unless you just want to stay in the water gardens. It’s also very dog-friendly so you can take them along too.
Eating – There is the Orangery cafe and a cafe overlooking the playground, plus a seasonal kiosk in the water garden and car park. You are welcome to picnic in the grounds.
Facilities in brief – Water garden, lake, maze and a storybook themed playground. Plus a large woodland and walks by the river Thames, smaller gardens with plenty to discover. Cafe and toilets.
