Things to do at Lion Salt Works review
The Lion Salt Works is the last remaining open pan salt works in Marston, near Northwich, Cheshire. It closed in 1986 and is now preserved as a museum.
The museum re-opened after a large investment back in 2015. It offers a fascinating journey through the life of the site. You can now explore the restored buildings and discover how the salt works operated and the impact it had. If you want to expand your day out there is the adjacent Northwich woodlands which is a 350-hectare site of vibrant and accessible parkland. Plus you aren’t far from the historic Anderton Boatlift.
You can learn about the process of boiling-down the brine into salt crystals in a theatrical setting with audio and video projection. Plus many other interesting and informative exhibits many of which are interactive.
There is also an outdoor play area which is based on elements of the Lion Salt Works building and equipment. At the heart of the new area is a distinctive bespoke ‘chimney’ climbing frame and slide. Young adventurers will also be able to clamber and explore a jungle climber, seesaw, wind-pump play equipment, cradle swing, wobble dish and train and carriage. You can visit the cafe, play area and butterfly garden for free.
