The Midland Railway Butterley is a heritage railway in Butterly near Ripley in Derbyshire. The railway runs many special events such as Day out with Thomas, annual 1960’s event, Santa Specials and trains to the seaside at Swanwick (late July to early September).
There are two railway museums, a Victorian railwayman’s church and a demonstration signal box plus much more. They also run a miniature narrow-gauge railway. There is a children’s playground and a nearby 35-acre country park at Butterley. Butterley is also home to a large model railway with a variety of scenes including stations, tunnels, farms and more.
The two railway museums are at Swanwick Junction plus another miniature railway and the golden valley light railway. This is also where you will find a small train-themed playground. The light railway runs on most weekends and school holidays from April to October. The trains run through the country park to a terminus that overlooks the canal basin and the entrance to Butterley Tunnel on the Cromford canal. Plus of course, you can enjoy a train ride on one of their vintage steam or diesel trains.

Eating – There is a tearoom at Butterley serving hot and cold food and drinks. There is also a tearoom at Swanwick and there is plenty of space for picnics.
