Things to do at Peveril Castle review

Peveril Castle in Castleton, Hope Valley, Derbyshire is owned and run by English Heritage. The castle sits at the top of a big hill that overlooks the quaint Derbyshire village. It must have been an effort building the castle back in the 12th Century. It’s quite a way up to the top!

The Keep itself is still being restored. King Henry II built Peveril castle back in 1176. It was mentioned in Domesday and is one of England’s earliest Norman fortresses. The ruin that stands today is small but picturesque.

It is a pretty steep walk with luckily lots of benches to rest on. It is not accessible for wheelchairs and I wouldn’t recommend taking a pushchair. The walk to the top is absolutely worth it though. The views from the top are simply breathtaking.

There is a small visitor centre at the bottom of the hill with a few interactive displays telling you all about the history of the castle. There is also a small shop.

Once at the top there isn’t much to see. The castle is now ruined and the Keep is small. But we spent a fair amount of time up there wandering around, exploring the site. Make sure you look over the wall at the top of the hill. There is quite a different view from there and equally stunning.
