Things to do at Michelham Priory review
Michelham Priory in Upper Dicker, near Hailsham in East Sussex, is a beautiful wedding venue. But it’s not just somewhere you can get married it’s also a family-friendly place to visit.
The priory is the site of a former Augustine Priory. There are sections today still standing from the 13th century and the 16th century. There are seven acres of grounds and gardens to explore which are surrounded by a moat. This is the largest medieval water-filled moat in the UK.
The house is run by the Sussex Archaeological society. They are a charity so any money you spend on your tickets goes back to the upkeep of the site. The Grade 1 listed building became a country house in the 1930s and was home to evacuees and Canadian troops during WWII. Inside the house, you can see a WWII evacuee bedroom, a Tudor kitchen, Prior’s room, undercroft and an interactive Victorian kitchen.
Other things to do include the grounds with a kitchen garden and a medieval herb garden. A historic watermill and forge. Plus an interactive medieval gallery in the 14th-century gatehouse. There is a replica Bronze Age roundhouse and an outdoor children’s play area. There are often family-friendly trails and events plus dressing up and activities in the house.
