Things to do at Layer Marney Tower review

Layer Marney Tower in Essex is a Tudor palace with gardens and parkland dating back to 1520. Located between Colchester and Maldon the building is Grage 1 listed and is a popular place for weddings. It’s not just all about weddings though, Layer Marney Tower is also a great family-friendly place to visit. The tower is only open to the public on select days in the summer so do check ahead before visiting.

Standing tall as England’s tallest Tudor Gatehouse it offers commanding views to the River Blackwater and beyond. Built during the reign of Henry VII by Henry, Lord Marney. You can climb all 99 steps to the top with stopping off places on the way up and down.

There are some beautiful gardens which are worth exploring and there is a large lawn where you can enjoy a picnic. There is a circular walk (ask at the shop) which takes you around fields of farm animals. There are pygmy goats, sheep, horses and chickens. The walk passes their glamping site and around the deer where you may hopefully spot them grazing. The walk also takes you through woodland. They also host family-friendly events.

Covid 19: Due to current restrictions not everything will be open, or it may be open differently to normal, at the attraction that you are visiting. Please consult their social media accounts, give them a call or visit their website if you can’t find the information you are looking for.
