Average time spent – 2-3+ hours.
Things to do at Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway RH&DR review
The RHDR has a special place in my heart as it is somewhere we went to the first time we went to Dymchurch to meet Chris’s mum. She lives right by the crossing near Dymchurch station and we go there every time we visit to see the trains at the platform. Chris used to catch the train to school each day when he was younger.
A rover ticket allows you to travel along the line and get off to explore the local area. Hythe has a café and nearby is a canal for a leisurely stroll. A short walk from Dymchurch station is the sandy beach, funfair and Martello Tower. New Romney station has a play area, café, shop and model railway exhibition (entry is included in the rover ticket). Dungeness has two lighthouses, a power station and a nature reserve as well as a restaurant and picnic tables at the station itself. The train stops at 7 different stations.
There are 13 different engines to look out for during your visit: 11 of them are steam engines that date from the 1920s and 30s. There is something special about a steam engine and watching it speed past while you walk through a field of wheat is quite something!
Special events run throughout the year and there are various timetables so it is best to check their website before you intend to travel. Tickets can be booked online for a 10% discount but a booking fee is added. The shops cater for children and adult enthusiasts with a range of Thomas the Tank Engine items and Hornby etc models.
Covid 19 – Please check the website or social media of an attraction before visiting. Many places may be open differently and some remain closed. Reviews do not mention all of these changes or possible price changes. Most places now require you to pre-book online in advance.
