Abbey Park is the biggest and main park in Leicester. It is located just a short drive north of the city centre. The park originally opened in 1882 and has a range of activities across its 36-hectares.
The park includes the archaeological ruins of the Abbey of St Mary’s and the ruins of Cavendish House. There is also a wide range of decorative and recreational features in the parkland. There are formal gardens, a sensory garden, a boating lake and a model lake.
Abbey park even has a miniature railway which is open every Sunday between May and October. They even run special seasonal events. There is a charge to ride on the train. Other things to do at the park include a children’s play area with a paddling pool, pets corner, tennis courts and a bowling green. The park often hosts annual events such as firework displays and festivals. Make sure you visit the lavender maze at the right time of year.
