Things to do at National Railway Museum review

The National Railway Museum is located near the railway station in York. It is a free attraction and although there is a car park I recommend you park elsewhere as it costs £10 to park there. The museum tells the story of rail transport in Britan and its impact on society. There’s plenty to see and do and we always manage to spend a good few hours there.

There is a great hall which is full to the brim with old trains, some of them you can even sit inside. It’s a great place for kids to explore. Every day they demonstrate with one of their engines how the turntable works. You can even walk in a tunnel underneath one of the trains and see the Mallard engine which is the fastest steam train in the world. There is even a fascinating ambulance train. Also in the great hall, you will find an under 5’s play area and the Mallard train ride experience at £3 per person.

There are other sheds near here with more exhibitions and also a workshop. There’s even a viewing area to stand and watch trains leaving or arriving at York station. Station hall is home to 4 platforms where you can peek or look in royal carriages, a postal carriage and more.

Outside there is a miniature railway which you can ride on for £3 each. Or you can take a 10-minute steam train ride (selected weekends and school holidays). This is £4 per person and under 2’s are free. There is also a road train which runs between York Minster and the museum. £3 for adults and £2 for children. I have heard rumours that they have recently reinstalled the playground outside.

Covid 19 – Please check the website or social media of an attraction before visiting. Many places may be open differently and some remain closed. Reviews do not mention all of these changes or possible price changes. Most places now require you to pre-book online in advance.
