Things to do at Rievaulx Abbey review
Rievaulx Abbey is situated near Helmsley in the North York Moors National Park. It is now the impressive ruins of one of England’s most powerful Cistercian monasteries. Owned and maintained by English Heritage.
There is a relatively new visitor centre where you can learn about Rievaulx Abbey’s fascinating past and all about the monks that once lived there. The abbey has extensive ruins that you can explore.
There is usually a trail available for the kids so make sure you enquire before leaving the centre. The trails are a great way for kids to learn about the monks that lived there even down to what they ate and where they went to the toilet. They also have audio tours available for those that want to learn even more about Rievaulx Abbey.
Kids will love exploring the ruins and are allowed to explore the walls and remains to their heart’s content. There are some very impressive structures remaining on the site which is quite unusual for an abbey. It’s a perfect place for a spot of hide and seek. There’s also walks in the local area and you can download maps from their website.
Covid 19 – Please check the website or social media of an attraction before visiting. Many places may be open differently and some remain closed. Reviews do not mention all of these changes or possible price changes. Most places now require you to pre-book online in advance.
