Things to do at Yorkshire Air Museum review
Yorkshire Air Museum is located near York in North Yorkshire. It is on the former RAF Elvington airfield and their displays and aircraft are in the original hangars and other WWII buildings, the control tower even still stands today.
There are around 20 buildings packed full with 60 historic aircraft and over 250,000 smaller items including artefacts, uniforms, documents, photographs and more. Some of the exhibits are interactive which is great for kids. In one of the hangars, they have three cockpits that kids can climb in and play around in to their heart’s content. To be honest, adults are supposed to be able to fit in as well but it’s a tight squeeze.
Displays range from learning about the pioneers of aviation, Super Zeppelins, fire and rescue service vehicles, armoured vehicles, a radio room and more. Some of the displays use mannequins and the rooms are set up how they may have looked during the war.
Aircraft include pre World War Two, World War two, Post World War two and the Cold War. They are best known for their Halifax bomber from WWII. We can highly recommend visiting on one of their event days. We have been to two of them and they’ve both been very good with lots of extra interesting things to see.
Make sure you pick up a trail available for the younger visitors. It includes a guide to the museum grounds and helps you to find out more about the history of aviation.
Covid 19 – Please check the website or social media of an attraction before visiting. Many places may be open differently and some remain closed. Reviews do not mention all of these changes or possible price changes. Most places now require you to pre-book online in advance.
