Things to do The Alnwick Garden review

Whether you are a keen gardener or just an admirer of beautiful spaces, there is lots to see on a day at The Alnwick Gardens. It is hard to imagine that just 25 years ago this site right next door to Alnwick Castle was a neglected, overgrown collection of rocks, sheds and trees. Today it has been transformed into an amazing place, full of gardens that the whole family can enjoy.

On the site, you will find a myriad of different types of plants, flowers and landscaping features. And there are so many interesting features that the whole family can enjoy in every nook and corner.

As soon as you enter the gardens, The Grand Cascade centrepiece dominates your view. The cascade is an incredible 3 tiered fountain. It has over 120 jets and gives an impressive display every half an hour.

On your way up the cascade you can walk through a stunning covered walkway made from metal arches, trees and ivy. Climb to the top of the cascade and walk through Venetian arches to find a wonderfully neat and organised ornamental garden, where large ornamental vases meet peaceful water features.

You can stroll along a meandering path through beautiful Taihaku cherry blossom trees. Or dare you walk into the Poison Garden? This part of the gardens is visited by tour guide only, as all the plants are either toxic, poisonous or narcotic. Guests are not allowed to touch, smell or even get close to some of the plants on display.

There is a rose garden with over 200 varieties of blooms to discover. And there is a traditional kitchen produce garden filled with all different kinds of fruit and vegetables. There is a specialist garden that just has water features. And finally, there is a bamboo maze for the whole family to explore.

Covid 19 – Please check the website or social media of an attraction before visiting. Many places may be open differently and some remain closed. Reviews do not mention all of these changes or possible price changes. Most places now require you to pre-book online in advance.
