Things to do Dunstanburgh Castle review
Dunstanburgh Castle sits on the coastline roughly 1.5 miles from Craster. The castle is a ruin; however, it is still interesting to look around and imagine what it looked like before it eventually was left to decay.
The castle was built on a grand scale which we learnt was as a status symbol and not as a stronghold. Even though it looks big from the outside the main part of the castle is quite compact, which is very surprising. However, it does not take away from how breathtaking this castle is.
To get to the castle you must first walk along the coastline towards the Castle. There are no toilets at the castle, so make sure you go before you start walking. The nearest toilets are in Craster at the car park and are free as far as I can remember. I took a baby carrier for my youngest when we visited. However, an all-terrain pram would probably be okay along the grass. There are a few gates to go through as well (make sure all gates are closed behind you to keep livestock safe).
The castle is dog friendly if you are taking your dog(s) with you. Dogs must always be kept on a lead as there is livestock around. I took my two with me and they seemed to enjoy the walk and exploring the castle. It can get rather windy as the castle is exposed to the elements, so make sure you take an extra layer (especially for little ones) in case they get a bit cold.
If you love wildlife, then you shouldn’t be disappointed. There are plenty of opportunities to see birds, dolphins and sometimes whales. So, make sure to keep your eyes peeled and take your camera!
