Things to do at Haynes International Motor Museum review
Haynes Motor Museum is the UK’s biggest exhibition of cars and motorbikes dating from 1900 to the present day near Yeovil in Somerset. The attraction also has a fun outdoor kids play area. There are more than 400 bikes and cars on display.
The collection is housed within 17 exhibition areas and includes veteran, vintage and classic cars. The cars come from the collection by John Heyne’s and his ever-increasing collection found a home in the remains of a Second World War American munitions dump in Sparkford. The museum was opened in 1985 and kept on growing with vehicles collected from all around the world. He went from a collection of 29 to 400 in nearly 30 years.
The museum holds a number of special events including the running of an interesting and eclectic range of vehicles. During these events, vehicles can be heard, touched and smelt.
Collections include veteran, vintage, minis, American dream and the Forshaw Speed collection. Plus classic British cars, hall of motorsport, Ferrari and historic cars. They often have extra activities laid on for the kids. For under 4’s there is the Haynes Motorland outdoor play area. This has a climbing frame, interactive garage and mini road system. Plus themed play, towers and a construction digger zone (small additional charge).
Older kids of 4-12 can play on coin-operated go-karts, have a go on the adventure climbing frame and can also play in the interactive garage area. There is a Top Trumps trail, brass rubbings and interactive and audio stations. There is also the Vroom Room which is an indoor soft play area with a motoring theme.
Next to the museum they have a karting track which must be booked in advance. Children have to be over the age of 8 and 1.2 metres. There is an additional charge for this activity.
