Things to do Africa Alive! review

Our trip to Africa Alive was soon after it opened post-lockdown and there were plenty of measures in place to ensure cleanliness and social distancing. The site is near the coast and the animals (many species from Africa including lions and cheetahs) seem very happy in their spacious, enclosures.

We were very lucky with the weather; it was a blue-sky day meaning that we could make to most of the long walks around the site. We really enjoyed watching the lions and walking around the edge of the plain of Africa enclosure where zebras, rhino and giraffes roam freely together in an area which resembles the African savannah. For an additional cost, you can feed the giraffes and the lions.

The highlight of the afternoon was watching the “Amazing African Animals’ display. This was a 15 minute talk (very educational and well done) during which a milky eagle owl flew over the crowd, guinea fowl ran about and pygmy goats climbed rocks and walked planks!

There were long queues for the toilets, but additional portacabin loos had been put in place to try and limit that. Usually, there is access to the discovery centre where you can see and touch reptiles, invertebrates and small mammals. The lemur encounter, the safari train and the indoor play area are all closed/not currently in operation due to covid. It’s fair to say that we didn’t get the ‘full park experience’ but there was still plenty on offer to keep the children engaged for the day and we had a great time!
