Things to do at Washington Old Hall review
Washington Old Hall is a National Trust owned property located in Washington in Tyne and Wear, about a 20 minute drive from central Newcastle.
The manor house is the ancestral home of the first American president, George Washington and has been beautifully restored and authentically furnished inside. There are regular events held in the building and guided tours run occasionally which are really informative and a great way to learn more about the Washington family. The house is quite atmospheric and feels a little eerie when it’s quiet. Wandering round the rooms makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time and it’s a great way to see how things looked in history.
Outside there are some small but well maintained gardens and a small wooden play in the shape of a castle which is suitable for younger children. There are some seats and picnic benches dotted around the gardens so you can sit and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the gardens or a family picnic on sunnier days.
There’s a large grassed field past the maintained gardens called ‘The Nuttery’ which is home to various ways to encourage wildlife. There’s a bug hotel, small pond and bird hide. It’s a great space for children to explore and they regularly have nature trails and events on where children can learn about the wildlife they might see.
Whilst Washington Old Hall is a very small attraction it’s a lovely place to visit on a weekday or during term time, while it’s quiet. It’s popular with parents with preschoolers as the grassed nature area is a great place to tire out little legs. It’s not somewhere to spend a whole day but a hidden gem to while away a couple of hours on a sunny day.
Covid 19 – Please check the website or social media of an attraction before visiting. Many places may be open differently and some remain closed. Reviews do not mention all of these changes or possible price changes. Most places now require you to pre-book online in advance.
