Things to do at Kirklees Light Railway review
The Kirklees Light Railway is a 3.5-mile long 15-in gauge railway line in the Kirklees area of West Yorkshire. They are well known for their family-friendly event days with Santa specials, Halloween trains and more.
You can travel in beautiful hand-painted carriages behind one of Yorkshire’s great little steam trains. The journey takes 25 minutes each way and journeys through the foothills of the South Pennines from Clayton West station to Shelley. The train even goes through a tunnel which is the longest tunnel on any 15-inch railway in Britain. They have six steam engines plus two diesel engines.
if one train ride isn’t enough a standard day ticket allows unlimited travel on the day you visit (subject to availability and not available on special event days). There are excellent outdoor play areas at both of the stations. The larger play area opened in 2018 at Clayton West and features a wooden train, plus swings, climbing frames and slides. Also at Clayton West station, there is the Clayton Flyer. This is a 71/4 inch miniature ride-on railway that takes on a trip around the duck pond. You can enjoy two loops for just £1 per person.
The second play area at Shelley was given a major revamp in 2019 and is based around a train. It includes a sandpit for kids to play in and overlooks the platform so it makes a great viewing area. You can also enjoy walks in the surrounding countryside and villages. Walking routes are accessible from Clayton West, Skelmanthorpe and Shelley.
Covid 19: Due to current restrictions not everything will be open, or it may be open differently to normal, at the attraction that you are visiting. Please consult their social media accounts, give them a call or visit their website if you can’t find the information you are looking for.
